There are a few steps you can use to identify problems in a niche
- Check on Quora and other forum site related to your niche. Identify the types of questions asked by people and identify what problem do they have.
- Check on Google and Jaaxy Keyword Research Tool to find out what keywords are used in their search term for questions.
3. Research Your Competition
You want to choose a niche that has a lot of competitors. When there are many people interested in a particular niche, there is lots of money to be made and there is lots of competition as well. To compete with your competitions, you have to produce high-quality, detailed contents that help your audience solve their problems.
If there is no competition for a particular niche, it doesn’t mean that no one thought of it, It might be there is not profit for that niche.
Think of your niche as a pie. It is always easier to get a piece from a big pie.
Can you profit from this niche market? this is the question you want to ask yourself. You must treat your online business like any other business. You provide your audience with solutions to solve their problem. In exchange for that, you earn your commission.
5. Listen to Other People
Sometimes we can hear from our friends, family, co-workers, and others talk about their interest and hobby. This can be a niche market to explore.

As stated in this post there are key factors that should or would determine if a niche is ideal or would be profitable. I think you are absolutely right about going for passion when picking a niche but in my experience, I would not consider this a must because some passion cannot be profitable.
I do believe in going after a niche you might like to know more about or a niche that interests you in some way. When you are curious about a niche you find out that you would be more interested in it and therefore spend more time on it.
There is every chance that this might lead to profit but as history shows, this might not always be the case. No matter one’s interest or passion if the niche they go for is not profitable or does not have a lot of search volume then they might just be wasting their time in building their website using that particular niche.

I like to be that big fish in a little pond. I’ve been blogging for years now and I realized how profound that principle is if you are to make money online.

“It is always easier to get a piece from a big pie.” – I’ve never thought of it that way but it totally makes sense. I mean, let’s be realistic here. What are the odds that you will find/invent a new niche that is also incredibly popular and profitable that someone else hasn’t thought of yet in a world with 7 billion people and a great amount of already established full-time online marketers?
The chances are (to be frank) not that great. They’re very slim, in fact. Thus, while it does somewhat go against conventional wisdom, it makes so much sense.
And I believe profitability is a HUGE factor. You have to have somewhat of a high-ticket items. That way I think it’s way easier to move to full-time than it would be if for every purchase you get something like $2.

I did find the article pretty insightful. Much of it I had heard already but there were a few really interesting points that got me thinking and challenging what I thought I already knew for a fact.
For example, the idea of the bigger pie did really get me thinking. Same with the big fish and small fish. Other than that, I feel the first two steps were incredibly profound. Listing a number of passions and interests before actually deciding on one to pursue can give you that broad insight and feeling that you have really weighed your options. And at the end of the day, it can have a significant impact on your later business if you, for example, realize that there was a passion of yours you would have preferred much more over the one that you picked but for some reason, you just didn’t think of it initially.
Identifying problems I feel is also huge. Cause we are essentially offering a solution to a problem every time. Whereas if there is no problem, then you probably won’t be able to help anyone as they don’t really need help. Or if you don’t understand the problem correctly, you might be leaving huge sums of money on the table. Which needless to say, is not ideal.
