What Is Market America and How Does It Work?
Market America also known as Shop.com, is a Multi-level Marketing (MLM) company or network marketing company. This company is founded by JR and Loren Ridinger in 1992. JR was formally a top distributor for Amway, another network company.
Market America is a global product brokerage and Internet marketing company. The company specializes in one-to-one marketing which has offices in many countries.
According to Market America, the company does not manufacture any one product or specialize in a single service. Their products are manufactured by other companies and exclusively market by Market America.
And they partner with many companies and sell the companies products on their retail website, Shop.com.
You must be wondering, why would people not buy directly from those products companies? This is because if they buy from Shop.com, they can get cashback. There is no cashback if you buy from the companies directly.
What is Shop.com?
Market America used to sell its products on its main website MarketAmerica.com.
But in late 2010 they acquire Shop.com, a shopping comparison site on the internet, from Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. Market America then set this website for all their retail sales.
Now, MarketAmerica.com is its official website for all the information about their company, their business model, and how to join as their distributors.
Through Shop.com, they are able to offer a wide range of products from companies like Nike, Target, Staples, The Home Depot, Apple, and many more.
Market America has its exclusive brands in various industries.
- Health and Nutrition
- Weight Management
- Age Management
- Baby & Children Care
- Cosmetics
- Skin Care
- Personal Care
- Home & Garden
- Entertainment
- Internet Services
- Financial Services
How to Make Money with Market America?
Market America refers their distributors as “UnFranchise Business Owners” or independent contractors. The distributors earn money from product sales commission and also by recruiting new members (downlines) to their teams.
Similar to other Multi-level Marketing companies, There are a start-up fee and recurring monthly fees.
The start-up fee to become “UnFranchise Business Owners” is $399 and a monthly recurring fee of $129.
The fee includes
- Getting Started Guide
- Audio Training Series
- Training and Seminar System
- Coaching and Mentoring
All these materials are supposed to provide you the necessary training to get started in this business.
Sometimes, the distributors are required to spend between $130-$300 on Market America products. The prices for Market America products are much higher than similar products elsewhere.
As a Market America distributor, it is a requirement to attend certain training and seminars which range from $20 to $200 each.
As you can see, before you can earn money from Market America, you’ll have to have some money to invest.

Pros and Cons of Market America
Pros
The acquisition of Shop.com which differentiates them from most MLM which focus on recruiting and selling products to earn money.
Shop.com help distributor earns some extra money through cashback.
Cons
- Very expensive Startup fee – $399 sign-up fee for start kit, $129 monthly fee for the website and other resources. And from time to time, require to purchase products and attend seminars.
- Products are highly priced, which makes selling them very difficult.
- More money made by recruiting people than selling products. The high price products make it even more difficult to recruit people to join the company.
Can You Make Money with Market America?
To be honest, it is very difficult to make money with Market America.
Why do I say that?
Market America distributors earn more money by recruiting people to join the company than by selling the products. When there are new recruits to the team, more money will be earn because the new recruits will need to purchase products and paid for training and seminars.
So, what Market America distributors really learn is not about selling products, but about getting people to join the company.
If you are good at recruiting people to join your team, as your downlines, you probably will make money if downlines are good at recruiting new people.
But, when you have more people as your downlines, you will be upgraded to a higher level, which you have to spend more time conducting training and purchase more products every month to fulfill your sales requirements.
In fact, over 90% of Market America distributors are losing money.
The main reason people fail or losing money as Market America distributors are
- Over priced products
- Very demanding sales requirement
In order to meet the sales requirement, most distributors have to purchase overpriced products to meet their quota.
Is Market America a SCAM?
NO. Market America is not a scam, due to the fact that it has real products and services to offer to customers.
This doesn’t mean that you’ll make money with Market America.
Conclusion
In my opinion, it is not easy for Market America distributors to make money because of the facts which I have mentioned above.
- Very expensive sign-up fee and monthly recurring fee
- In order to make money, you make to keep on recruiting people to your team
- There are very demanding sales requirement for staying active and qualified
- The company products are overpriced and distributors are required to buy them just to meet their sales requirements
So, it is advisable to stay away from Market America and Shop.com

Wow, this is an expensive one. Like you said, I don’t think it’s necessarily a scam. It does offer real products and such. But the possibility of making a decent amount of money for your effort seems slim. At best, you might get some cash back from the Shop website, but that might be it. This is exactly why I’ve always steered clear of MLM type ventures. I’ve been working on affiliate marketing for a short while now and find the prospects much better. At least you don’t have to make your friends uncomfortable by inviting them to all these events to try to sell them on joining up. Thanks for sharing this very informative review!
